The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. Radio Feedback

reblog reblog

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

My project is an open source commenting system for radio programs.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Users will be able to deliver feedback through SMS, voice, or smartphone apps. An API and sample code will be provided for developers to easily integrate a feedback system into their mobile app.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

Radio stations will use it to collect and pre-screen valuable feedback from users who won’t have to hold for hours to have their say.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

1) This software solves a problem many radio stations have today: having to pre-screen hundreds of callers who call into their show. This is a money saving proposition for them

2) Like any other successful open source project, this one will depend on strong leadership and good documentation.

3) Radio stations

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

An open source project is only as successful as it’s community. I will implement the standard community building tools for this project: gitHub, listserv, Twitter and open source documentation.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

I have not built anything yet, but I do have two opportunities to use such a software. The first is WVUM at the University of Miami were students want to build a game show with it, and the second is s health communication project in Kampala, Uganda for a male circumcision campaign to reduce HIV contraction rates.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Adoption and contributions to the project.

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

The project is fairly simple to implement on a basic level. As we add more features it will get more complex. At this point we would only need funds to contract an additional developer.
