Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Mobile App Accelerator program for women in Africa that will empower women to participate and unleash their “mobile app” development potential

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

The Accelerator program will be a dedicated space to mentor,educate and train women to launch their apps,scale up existing apps,market their business and to develop apps in areas of market need.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

The apps will be designed to address market needs, given that women developed apps are still unheard of in Africa but largely geared towards the female and youth population.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

Through social media tools, through advertising in local media and in NGO/business networks.

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

I am already well connected in the women’s accelerator, leadership development and NGO networks both in New York and in Africa(through my work). I would have to continue networking and sharing the aims of the project hosting information events and speaking at both public and private institutions.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

I am conducting participatory networking forums with individuals and groups to understand the need and potential for growth in Africa such as in Uganda,Kenya and South Africa.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

A well funded accelerator program that has the means,connections and scope to increase numbers of women and girls in the mobile technology field in Africa. A space where women not only develop apps but have the mentoring to be successful business women and entrepreneurs.
