Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

To create one user community commenting on top issues in Chicago by aggregating across news source platforms the most commented on news stories that will be ranked by localized interest and allow users to join the conversation in a centralized mobile location.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

This project will be a mobile site that will be connected to live data, which will be updated regularly through feeds from both large and small news sources in the Chicago area.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

This tool will be a valuable resource for our community to access and participate in the most important news stories to their areas.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

A portion of the budget would be allocated to promotion of the tool via the Chicago news community. The project will also be promoted on air on WTTW-11, Chicago’s premier public broadcasting station, as well as via social media.

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

This project will connect the entire news community in Chicago, large and small organizations that utilize print, television, and online platforms.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

Chicago Tonight on WTTW has a powerful digital platform and a network of partnerships with many news sources in Chicago, and would use these relationships to build the collaboration needed to implement this project.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Success will be determined by the amount of people in the Chicago area using the tool to gather top stories and participate in the dialogue surrounding that topic.

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

To succeed we would need financial, human, and technical resources, as well as the willingness of the local news community to work with us and open their data sources to be aggregated.
