Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

Niiiws - the best of the national press, personalized

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Niiiws is a free personalized newspaper with the most relevant daily stories from your country’s news outlets, on your mobile devices.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Niiiws collects all the news on the local press, measures them according to their relevance in the social networks, and presents an updated and customizable daily newspaper with the ‘hottest’ news under the stewardship of the public in a single application.

You may customize your application defining which sources, authors and themes you prefer, in order to have your daily news personalized. Niiiws is currently available for iPad, but during this year there will be iPhone and mobile Win8 versions.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

Niiiws is a daily usage app for people who want to keep up with the news that matter to them without having to read through several websites/newspapers: think Zite for national press.

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]


During the last few months we have been present at several events, Startup Games Britain, Switch Conference and won App Circus Vodafone/Nokia PT award, establishing contacts with all kinds of people in the mobile and media industries. Our aim is to reach out to news outlets to work together on a new concept of news distribution. Big data analysis and premium tools will also allow us to interact in a new way with journalists, editors and independent publishers.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

We believe information is crucial for everyone. Therefore, we measure our success through the number of people we reach and the impact we make in their lives.


8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

Since we measure our success through the number of people we reach, we will need means to increase our user base: namely marketing and commercial resources. Moreover, investing in our talented team, in order to constantly improve the algorithm and the entire app concept, is our main concern.
