Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

An ubiquitous multimedia information system with native mobile applications for internet news distribution using content and context awareness over geo-location, tracking, registered services on social networks and augmented reality.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

The project will use smartphones with permanent access to  GPS device, wireless internet (Wi-Fi/3G) and push notification services.
The front-end interface will have a design thought to facilitate user’s interaction with common embedded resources like multi-touch, camera and multi-tasking services, on the other side, the back-office will facilitate civic stakeholders content submission.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

News consumers and other people (tourists, visitors, locals, curious) that want to know and learn more about the places and communities where they are or will be.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

a)  Application markets for mobile devices like App Store, Google Market and Windows Market where the application can be installed.
b)  Through an internet web page with more information, videos and screenshots about the service and its application.
c) Via social media and public keynotes with potential stakeholders (see next answer) 

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

a) Community platform partners: news media, corporations, municipalities, tourism, businesses and cultural players.
b) News consumers associations, academic communities and labs.

We already have a content management system and iOS application mock-up with geo-referenced content.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

It will reach top #150 in 10 countries 12 months after launch. 

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

A project leader, 3 software developers (one that needs  to be recruited), 1 designer, 1 journalist, 1 social media marketeer, computers, software and development licenses.
