Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Splyst is a smart dashboard that allows you to organize your internet experiences, learns your interests, and proactively searches for the things you want to see.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Our entire application is built on a mobile foundation to be optimized for all devices. We strive to proactively support the all touch sensitive devices where ever they are with whatever device they have be it desktop, tablet, or mobile.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

With the continued growth of the information era, college students will use Splyst because they currently spend way more time organizing and searching for information than they would like to. 

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

-Through college professors at the University of Miami

-Through built-in social media channels

-By friends who have the ability to collaborate on interests

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

We are a start-up out of the University of Miami’s Launch Pad, and have strong relationships with professors in the School of Business Administration. We have an adviser who is a former investment banker and heavily involved in the New York start-up community who will help expand our New York networks.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

We have a recommendation engine that is able to analyze content and generate recommendations based on bookmarks and a users social interactions though Facebook / twitter etc. 

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Success is when we change the way information is acquired by having information that searches for the right user instead of the contrary. It is when we have impacted the lives of millions by proactively providing information that is relevant, accessible, and consolidated into one space.

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

To continue changing the way information is acquired we need capital to enhance our infrastructure and for marketing. We are also seeking additional advisers who have experience in scaling up tech companies and could provide support in finding new technical talent.
