The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

Access to Menstrual Health and hygiene education,services and products through mobile application.
The community,especially girls and women.Research has shown that the lack of access to menstrual health management, affordable pads and the taboos existing around menstruation, leads to significant costs in education, productivity, health and dignity.
First, working with the community health workers who have been equipped with knowledge on health issues as community mobilizers, these are distributed allover the country. Second about four million of the population has access to a mobile phone hence on average about 80% of the household owns a mobile phone. Third channel is through the national radio which is listened to by 90%of the population
Over 5000 community members, 10 health experts from water Aid, 5 school in Eastern Province have been trained on menstrual health and hygiene management.Working with Ministries of Health and Education and UNICEF to provide menstrual health education.We shall also work with other grassroots organizations,hospitals,orphanages,prisons and refugee camps.
Development,transfer of Sanitary pad production technology model using local low cost materials, development of menstrual health and hygiene education content and advocacy programs,both of which have been tested with end users. (www.sheinnovates.com),
Increased access to knowledge of menstrual health and hygiene management,breaking the taboos that exist around menstruation and affordable sanitary pads for targeted community. As result, this will provide a local solution to mitigate the education,health and economic costs associated with the current status quo.
A mobile phone application that will ensure delivery of the program, funds to develop and train on the usage of the application and the monitoring and evaluation of the project.
