Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Write3 is a mobile application and journalism tool with a sole purpose to motivate citizen journalism.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Write3 modernizes and simplifies the ability to relay news by being mobile based, and allowing anyone across the globe to upload articles and pictures about what they feel is newsworthy. It enables its users to read or send texts, images, audio or video files directly from their handsets to Write3’s mobile journalism portal through internet.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

Write3 is and will be used by anyone in the world who believes in sharing stories and spreading local, national and international news, written for the citizens, by the citizens.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

1 – Digital Media Advertising
Like any mobile application, one of the main ways people will learn about Write3 is through various digital media marketing such as mobile store, social media, popular website, news website etc. This will allow for some preliminary promotion, and begin what we hope will become a fad for the name “Write3’ and it’s logo.

2 – Partnership with Mainstream Media
This includes newspapers, Television channel, university journalism departments, journalism blogs etc. Mainstream news channel can use Write3 technology to promote community or citizens news around the world.

3 – Awareness Building & Competition
People would learn about our project through new media awareness building campaign and workshop at community level, university seminar & workshop and through different news competition. (example of our previous Competition & workshop in Bangladesh

5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

We have already initiated our connections with few Bangladeshi mainstream media specially Private TV Channel (i.e. ATN News & Somoy TV) to promote WRITE3 citizen’s news in their channel through various competition.

To strong fold our network and create citizen journalism awareness, we have conducted new media capacity building workshops in many universities having journalism department & photo journalism club.

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

We have already created a prototype/beta version of Write3 Mobile Application (for Nokia Mobile Handset http://store.ovi.com/content/205136 ) & linked portal ( https://www.write3.com)where 2493 registered citizen journalist all around Bangladesh have begun writing and sharing their articles.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Seeing Write3, being utilized globally for sharing news where user includes the mainstream media using the app or the portal as their news source.

Seeing Write3 exercise all its’ social media capabilities globally and become the most powerful source of all news for the mainstream media.

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

We need to expand globally and for that a redesigning of our mobile & web technology for all technical platforms (android, IOS, blackberry etc) is necessary. Having it in different languages (especially English, French, Spanish and Arabic) will enable greater international reach. Promoting Write3 to all smart phone users across the globe will lead us to our success. We also require mentoring for in-house editorial capacity building.
