Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Metaopionion will be a public platform for rating news content and coverage of Latin America on line media that would promote a higher quality and more accountable journalism in the region by establishing higher quality and ethical standards in news contents. 

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Mobile tools would allow anyone anywhere to rate news quality and share their ratings with others in their communities, or even in their geographical proximity. Users will know how many ratings similar o different to theirs can be found in a given radius using their mobile devices.

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

The platform will be used by Latin American citizens to give critical feedback of media content to build a more accountable journalism by compiling people’s ratings to produce consolidate landscapes of media organizations that would allow not only compare them and rate them, but to identify champions of good journalistic practices and accredit them with a “quality seal”

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

  1. Social Media campaigns have proven to be the XXI century word of mouth. Data reported by Fastrack showed that 88% of Internet users were registered in social networks in 2010. Retrieved 24 April 2012.) As access to mobile devices increases it can be expected that social media use will also increase.   2. Specialized Media reviews are the main source of knowledge for an increasing digital literate population with access to cheaper mobile devices and expectations of two double digits growth.

  3. Traditional Media advertising Traditional written media and radio ares still important in Latin America as baby boomers are late adopters of new technologies and are more likely to participate in live debates via radio or printed media.

The pilot platform will be tested in Colombia, and we will work closely with local and specialized media. We will look to create ties with organizations interests in maintaining and promoting media accurate use of information and data such as Polifact and the New Latin American Journalism Foundation.

The idea is in the concept development and research stage.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Success looks like a platform with thousands of users using it during the first year, qualifying news accuracy in at least three national news outlets using our methodology. Success in the long run looks like our platform became a quality seal for news accuracy by been a quotable source of journalism accountability.

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

To succeed we need the resources to develop the methodology and the application as such; in the long term, we also need the resources to hire a community manager to develop our community and a forum human monitor to prevent abusive behavior. Revenues will be generated by media organization subscription’s to Metaopinion network in order to gain access to consolidated and disaggregated data regarding the rating of their news content.
