Knight News Challenge

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information. Winners receive a share of $5 million in funding and support from Knight’s network of influential peers and advisors to help advance their ideas. The first round of 2013, which opens in February, will invite innovators from all disciplines to focus on tools for open government. In 2012, three challenge rounds, each focused on an emerging trend, drew more than 2,500 entries.

Challenge 1 - on NETWORKS: Winners were announced June 18.

Challenge 2 - on DATA: Winners were announced Sept. 20.

Challenge 3 – on MOBILE: Winners were announced Jan. 17.

1. What is your project? [1 sentence]

Providing news by incentive participation and at the same time providing BoP insights for companies, organizations and governments.

2. How will your project use mobile tools and approaches? [2 sentences]

Local communities answer every day some (social-economic) questions, they answer via sms (or call) and if their information is used they get x sms’es for free. The screened info can provide news to them and BoP insights for organizations. 

3. Who will use it and why? [1 sentence]

It can be any community, but the focus is local communities that are now deprived of news like the ‘bottom of the pyramid’ in Southeast Asia.

4. Please list three ways they would learn about your project.

-India is planning to provide millions of mobile phones to the poorest, while doing that inform them about this project too.

-Via NGO’s and aid organizations

- via awareness campaigns


5. What connections have you made, or will you make, with others [communities, organizations or networks] about your project? [2 sentences]

Governments, mobile operators and organizations as Oxfam and Unilever (shakti networks)

6. What part of the project have you already built? [1-2 sentences, feel free to include links]

Not built yet, but doing research now in India and I know NGO’s like Oxfam Novib are busy with finding ways to provide BoP insights about the poorests for (aid) organizations. Also governments like the American government, are focussing on mGovernment.

7. What does success for your project look like? [1-2 sentences]

Providing and receiving financial neutral news and to publish this also outside the networks. The local networks make the info valuable for the whole network. 

8. What resources do you need to succeed? [1-2 sentences]

Providing mobile devices to people that don’t have them yet, informing them how it works and build a network to send the survey’s and filters them and creating a fund for reward and pay traffic. At the same time providing BoP insights to organizations.
